About Brown & Syme Painters in Nelson

Brown and Syme are painters and decorators with a diverse range of capabilities. Whether it’s painting or wallpapering interior or exterior work, residential or commercial, alterations or new houses, they have the team capable of doing the job to the highest standard.

Brown and Syme have the skills and experience to tackle residential and commercial jobs, on a scale of painting a front door, to a three bedroom house or a stadium. They don’t just say “no job too big or small”, they prove it – they aren’t phased by the scale of any job.

Brown & Syme originated in Christchurch founded by Peter Mason. Peter had an employee wanting to move to Nelson and he saw this as an opportunity to launch a Nelson-based business. He needed someone experienced in the painting and decorating industry and saw Richard Haynes as an ideal candidate.

At the time Richard had over 10 years’ experience dealing with painters and decorators in Nelson, and was managing a Resene store at the time. Peter offered Richard a position running his Nelson Branch. Richard saw this as an ideal opportunity to add to his extensive knowledge of the painting industry, to lead a team in the application of the products he had extensive knowledge of.

Richard developed sound relationships with Nelson clients and Brown and Syme soon established a firm foothold in the Nelson region as a serious contender for painting and decorating work. With plans for growing the business even further, Richard was offered a partnership.

11 years later, Brown and Syme have gone from strength to strength, operating throughout the Nelson / Tasman district, extending down the country to Christchurch. Their reputation has preceded them and they have been sought out for repeat work on the West Coast.

The team consists of 10 tradesmen (and tradeswomen) with staff numbers swelling to as many as 22 when projects have grown. Their objective is to always meet demand and maintain their high standard of workmanship.

Richard provides a bit of insight about what makes Brown and Syme so successful, “I often get asked complex questions about painting. The unique point of difference that I bring to the table is having worked for a paint company for so many years, I know the technical side of paint and how it is made. I know the systems, having dealt with architects and designers writing specifications of how to apply paint and what products to use. Having now run the Nelson business for 11 years on the practical side of the industry with a team of professionals, I believe I can answer most questions thrown at me. Yet, if we need to give advice on something outside the norm, we’ll say so, research and provide the right solution”.

Brown and Syme have strived to build solid partnerships and relationships with suppliers. They have achieved accreditation with systems and are registered as Master Painters.

The company predominantly uses quality Dulux or Resene Paints, as being registered applicators for Zone products, Equus, Nuplex and Intumescent fire coatings for steel and timber.
